"Favorite Season" poems were written by third and fourth graders
after reading the book From Dawn till Dusk written by
Vermont author Natalie Kinsey-Warnock and illustrated
by Vermonter Mary Azarian.
Fall
Golden leaves falling from the sky
Hot bacon sizzling and popping on the stove
First shots of hunting season ring out
Cool winds of fall are blowing
Freshly frying hot sausage
Fall is a wonderful season!
Ben Munkres
Summer
Sunset over the lake and fireworks
Roads and meadows that go on forever
Fresh scent of pine needles
Sounds of paddles from canoes
and the sound of people swimming
happy to be here
fresh wild picked blueberries
I love summer!
Jayden Rushton
Winter
Snowy owls and steaming hot chocolate
Whiff of hot chocolate and maple syrup
Birds chirping around the yard
Snow and ice on my hands
Maple sugar on snow is so nice to taste
Next year might be even better!
John Coleman
Summer
The ocean waves of Nantucket,
wheels of my bike turning
Salty beach air, long stringy seaweed
The crash of cold ocean waves
and the horn of the ferry
The sting of ocean water in my eyes
The crash of a wave flinging you around
Warm chocolate croissant at the store
Cold, yummy ice cream
I think about what we will do tomorrow,
Walk around the point, bike into town? Maybe?
Cady Scout McKibben-Bauer
Fall
Lots of action on apple orchards
Cool Halloween costumes
Good harvest smells
Geese honking as they head south for winter
Going outside and jumping in a pile of leaves
Nice sweet, juicy apples
It’s the best season to go outside and pick apples!
Carter Lee
Winter
Crisp, white snow and kids skiing and sledding
Smokey smell from the warm campfire
Jingle of Christmas bells and Merry Christmas cheer
Joy of Christmas and warmth of the campfire
Delicious sugar on snow
Looking forward to having a campfire the next day
and all the fun stuff for the upcoming day
Eliot Schneider
Winter
Fluffy white snow
Fresh, pure winter air
Fire crackling in the stove
Warmth and coziness in front of that fire
Wonderfully sweet syrup on pancake and waffles - tasty
Practically flying on my skis
Eli Marks
Summer
Kids playing and splashing in pools, lakes, and oceans
Ice cream and roasting marshmallows and hot dogs
Waves splashing on the shore and kids laughing when swimming and playing
Warmth and sun shining on my back when I am outside
Ice cream and Popsicles (a cure for being hot)
I can’t wait for next summer!
Naomi Brightman
Winter
Beautiful crystallized icicles hanging from the apple tree
Fresh smell of newly fallen snow
Shouts from my brother and friends
Freezing snow against my back when I fall
Out of the sled
Fresh maple syrup on newly fallen snow
That, there is not a better season!
Nora Wooten
Winter
People skating and skiing on winter ice and snow
Maple syrup on snow and the burning
wood on the fireplace
The soft sound of Christmas carols in the street
Warm – huddled up next to the fireplace with
a cup of hot chocolate in my hand
The taste of syrup on snow melting in my mouth
Winter is awesome!
Thomas Denton
Summer
Kids playing ball at the beach
Mixed scent of flowers
Splashing of people jumping into the lake
and the buzz of bees
Hot sweat dripping down my neck
Lemonade with cold ice cubes
This is the best day ever!
Jack Wallace
Late Spring
Fireflies glistening in the midst of the night
Pollen on beautiful flowers
Birds chirping in swaying trees
Me: feeling sad, happy, and angry
Sucking maple sugar under petals of clover
Peaceful thoughts…
Jackson Poppenga
Summer
Clouds moving across the sky
Newly fresh cut grass
Cool wind blowing in my hair
Itchy grass
Fresh pears from my pear tree
Summer is a great season!
Lily Isham
Winter
Beautiful Vermont trees layered with snow
Steaming hot cocoa with mini marshmallows
Christmas songs jingling through my ears
Warm – sitting by the wood stove on a cold day
Maple syrup on snow melting in my mouth
I can’t wait for next winter!
Sarah Holmes
Winter
People skating on ponds, skiing, and playing in snow
Maple syrup and burning wood
Christmas bells and Christmas carols
Warmth of the fire
Hot chocolate and maple syrup on snow
Winter is the best!
Eddie Hodde
Fall
Colorful leaves falling from trees
Musty, decaying smell from the ground
Birds chirping as they fly south
Cold wind of autumn
Delicious pumpkin pie
Fall is the best place to be!
Alex Tolgyesi
Late Winter
The sad-looking snowman who is
half the size he used to be
The freshness of the snowy grass
Birds singing to celebrate that spring is coming
The warm sun beating down on my back in
Such a pleasant way
The cold but soothing taste of the icicle
I’m licking right now
How could any other season be better?
Julia Bartlett
Mud Season
Candles on my birthday cake
Cake with blue and purple frosting
Birthday song sung before the cake
Presents from friends and family
Cake with frosting and sprinkles
I’ll miss being nine this year
Paige Vaughn
Spring
Horses running on green grass, birds, bees
and beautiful green trees
Flowers, honey from bees
Birds and bees and crickets chirping in the night
The soft feeling of flowers and the warm sun
The delicious taste of ice cream
What beautiful things are in the spring!
Natasha Paquin
