Olive Oil Guest!

Kristi came in to third grade and shared photos from a recent
family trip to Italy.  They were fortunate enough to be able
to visit a small olive grove operation and were all able to assist,
beginning to end, in the process of making extra virgin olive oil.

Ask your third grader about the process.

 Walking through the olive grove.

Sticks are used to knock the olives down.

Olives and leaves gathered on the net.

Crates of olives.

How do the olives move up this cylinder?
Ask a third grader.  Hint: (Archimedes' screw)
Follow this link to view an animated
example of Archimedes's screw.

Olives empty from the cylinder into this bin and are
now heading to the crushing stage.

Olives are pressed on rope discs.

 Several stacked discs.

Once the the olive liquid has been extracted,
the olive waste is swept out.  This waste can actually be
processed more, but would then produce general
olive oil, not "extra virgin" olive oil.

Chickens enjoy a meal of this crisp leftover treat!

Water and oil are now separated
out by this machine.

The final product!  Yum!

One of the bottles filled with olive oil made by Kristi's family.

Students had the opportunity to test taste the olive oil.
Everyone tried it and most students had seconds and/or thirds.
Three week old extra virgin olive oil straight from Italy!
It doesn't get much better than that!

THANKS KRISTI!  THIS WAS A TREAT!
