Alliteration May = Tongue Twisters!

Third graders are using alliteration as a way to create a
class "tongue twister" book.
They figured out that using class resources like
the dictionary, encyclopedias, and maps could be
very useful.  They'll share the book when it is completed.

Molly's Parents Pay Third Grade a Visit!

Yes!  Molly's parents visited Cornwall Third Grade.
They actually participated in all of the afternoon
activities.  They listened to the last few chapters
of The Hoboken Chicken Emergency
then they "did the math," with the class.  Next,
students had a chance to ask them some questions,
and finally they played "Four Corners" and "Flinch."

Lisa and Steve were good dancers throughout
"Four Corners" game.  Check it out!

Morning Work!

"Morning Work"
8:00 AM until Morning Meeting Time
During this time third graders "sign in"
on the morning message board and work on
spelling, math, and independent studies.

Signing in.

Working on "Thank You" notes.

Working on independent research.

Molly Morning Message Math!

Check out third graders explanations on how they used
parentheses to make their math equations true!
Amazing!

Cherry Tomato Update!

Third graders added the number of seeds they found in each
of the10 cherry tomatoes. The total was 906 seeds.
They rounded that number to 900 so they could
work with "nice" numbers.  They knew that if each seed
became a plant that each plant would produced an average
of 50 cherry tomatoes.  That meant there would be about
45,000 cherry tomatoes.  If each of those cherry tomatoes had 90 seeds,
there would then be 4,050,000 seeds.  Yikes!  We're in
"Tomato Haven!"
Question posed:  If a cherry tomato plant can produce so many
cherry tomatoes full of seeds, then why isn't the earth just covered in cherry
tomatoes?
and
Do all seeds survive?  Ask a third grader!

Molly Teaches Math!

Third graders are noticing some pretty neat patterns on this
month's calendar pieces.  Especially amazing is the fact that they
are looking at mathematical expressions that involve more than one
operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and/or division) in order
explain the picture on the calendar piece.  Third graders are beginning
to think about "order of operations."
Molly shares one of the calendar pieces with students and
asks them to think of an equation they could write that would
support the picture on the calendar piece.

John's Mystery Bag (Kitchen) Item!

This mystery item stumped everyone.   See third grade guesses
on the board in back of John.  This is a pretty cool "hot dog cutter!"

Seamus Makes a Visit to Third Grade!

Seamus is Mrs. Hackett's dog.  He is a beautiful friendly lab.
He paid third graders a quick visit.  They wished he could stay all day!

Hard Working Writers!

Third graders use personalized spelling carrels as a resource
when spelling.  These carrels house the 375 most frequently
used words in English language and these are the words third
graders should know how to spell by the end of third grade.
Go, third graders!!!
